Between Dream and Reality
In the portraiture of Lukasz Kapuscinski, nature serves as a quiet sanctuary for inner reflection. The session with Kasia is an intimate study in subtle transitions, where a slight shift in gaze and lighting redraws the line between tangible reality and the waking dream.
Two Gazes, Two Worlds
Leaning against an arched bough sheltered deep within the English woods, Kasia appears in a vintage tailored dress accented by a crisp white collar and cuffs. The photographer created two contrasting interpretations of this quiet moment, exploring how post-production grading mirrors the interior psychological state of the subject.
With her eyes open, the gaze is penetrating and direct, surrounded by deeper, shadowy chiaroscuro that grounds her presence firmly in the tangible world. Yet the moment her eyes close, the entire atmosphere lightens, softening into a warm, fairy-tale glow of copper tones and swirly optical bokeh. They are two distinct color treatments of the same woodland moment, each evoking an entirely different emotional dimension.
A Pause Between the Pages
The companion study transitions to the base of a towering pine, where fallen needles blanket the forest floor. Seated barefoot against the textured bark, Kasia gently embraces an antique, gold-embossed astronomical volume against her chest.
There is no heavy contrivance here, only the honest simplicity of a reader who has just paused mid-chapter, closing her eyes to drift into reverie. Filtered afternoon sunlight dapples her profile, creating a serene, open-ended moment that invites each viewer to imagine their own continuation of the story.
